A job I could not apply for...

Killer Angels, pg. 202: "To be a good soldier you must love the army. But to be a good officer you must be willing to order the death of the thing you love . . . That is one reason why there are so very few good officers." Ugh. I would not want to be the one in that position. How could a person stand to send their friends and companions to their deaths? I guess I wouldn't be a good officer . . . or a good soldier, for that matter.

  2. I agree...Longstreet, poor guy, what a place he was in. On pg. 267 of Killer Angels, where he is speaking with Freemantle and said, "Tactics?....Tomorrow we will attack an enemy that outnumbers us, an enemy that outguns us, an enemy dug in on the high ground,...and if we win it will not be because of the tactics...it will be a bloddy miracle."
He knew what they were in for, and had to take them in anyway. :(
