Evolution of fighting

On page 141 of Killer Angels, Longstreet was telling Fremantle the evolution of fighting. He told him about how they used to face each other and shoot from a close distance. He also mention how they used bows & arrows, swords, or man to man fighting. I thought it would be fun to talk with the students about how fighting has changed over the years. They could make a venn diagram comparing the Civil War fighting compared to some other time era.

  1. Any type of war or fighting talk always gets a response from my fifth grade boys. They typical responses such as, "Cool", "Oh yeah", etc, never cease to amaze me. Death and fighting is so un-real to them, probably because of all the video games, and movies that they watch. In our Civil War studies this year, we had some really great discussions about family members being sided against family members, and neighbors against neighbors. Things seem a little more real to them when you start getting they and their families involved in the "what ifs".
