Killer Angels

On page 45 in Killer Angels, Buford talks about how he thinks the "civilians are too fat and quick to ask you to die for them". This got me thinking about what soldiers may think of me as a civilian. Are we "quick to ask them to die for us"? I thought this could be an interesting topic to discuss with students. We could also have a mini lesson on showing our military that we're thankful for fighting for our freedoms.

  1. Good thoughts. We adopted a soldier one year. He was the husband of one of our reading volunteers. We made him cards for every holiday and we sent him sweets randomly.
We(the parents and students) sent a Christmas tree and full decorations for the tree plus presents--two big boxes. When he came home he gave us a flag that had flown on base and money with Saddam's face on it. It was a good relationship. He knew that our school and our classroom was thinking of him and his men regularly. It was also a good mini lesson in geography.

Fantastic idea! What a great thing to do to strengthen both the students and the soldier.

  3. Great idea. I do an activity for veterans day where students find a friend, relative, neighbor, teacher who is a veteran or is active duty and they interview them and we have a wall of honor in our classroom where they put a star with the persons name and what branch of the military they are in. It works nice but I think incorporate your ideas as part if it would be good. Thanks.
