Killer Angels

I am finding this novel to be very absorbing. The author has succeeded in creating in my mind a visual imagery of the terrain (via the inserted maps chronologically set) and his use of verbage. I am totally enthralled. Also, the author has captured not only a vivid characterization of each of the role players, but has also identified the individual politics that existed on both sides. As I continue to read, I further expect to see the "vision" of what happened. While I have read several versions of the Battle of Gettysburg, this is the first to really bring it alive for me. I readily admit that part of the reason it comes alive for me from this author may be that I am at a stage of my life experience which enables me to more fully appreciate its significance.

  1. I too am finding that the "Killing Angels" book to be very captivating! I am a bit confused as to the ref. of killing angels during the first day of the battle (I think) and another ref. at the end of the first day on page 158 where it says that "He could not find the shite angel." Any ideas as to what is being refurred?

  2. Well said, Paul. I appreciate the maps. I am not finding it an easy read--a good read, yes. I find I have to keep rereading certain sections because I am not very familiar with the generals and leaders of the battle. I have sketched the leaders with little cartoon stick figures (Marzano's Non-Linguistic representation). This has helped me keep track of who is who.

  3. Tui,

That isn't a bad idea. I started reading Battle cry of Freedom and I am really learning a lot, but I think I would enjoy it even more if I had taken the time to make the little stick figures to help keep track of everything I am reading. I can't believe how many things I have already seen in the reading where I think: "Why didn't I know that?"

  4. Tui,

Great idea about drawing each of the major players. I think that had I done that, I wouldn't have had to keep turning back to the description of each person at the beginning of the book. I will do that the next time I read a book like this. Thank you.

  5. Larry, are you mocking my stick figures or are you sincere? :)

  6. Tui,

I'm not mocking you,far from it. I really liked your idea. I was thinking that a form of notes or art to help me keep better track of what I was reading would be a great idea.
