Marzano Strategies

As I have begun reading Marzano's book I have been impressed by how engaging and effective the different teaching strategies are. I have used several in my teaching and the students seem to really enjoy them a lot more than they do some of the other teaching strategies that I use. I can't help but wonder, where these strategies were when I was the student. I think I would have enjoyed school a lot more if my teachers had used some of Marzano's ideas.

  1. I agree, Larry. All through my education program in college I kept wondering why my teachers growing up never used any of the strategies I was learning about!

  3. My sixth grade teacher (elementary) ate lunch in his room and took naps after lunch. We tried to come in quiet as not to wake him then we just kind of did stuff in the room. There wasn't much Marzano in there either :).

  4. I was told in a workshop once that we teach in much the same manner that we were taught. I certainly hope not. Of course, I'm old enough that all of these new studies about working in groups, students setting their own learning goals, etc. were not even being considered. I try to use the latest in technology, the best practices, etc. in my teaching but I also realize that being a good teacher is an ongoing, continuous project. And, I also realize that when I'm not feeling well or extremely tired, I do probably fall back on some of the same techniques used on me.
