What a day he had....deserves a little bit of a rest, right? He is told that he and his men are "relieved", and to where? Pg. 300 "A lovely spot. Safest place on the battlefield. Right smack dab in the center of the line. Very quiet thee." Little did he know.....

If you like his description in the book....then have you seen the Movie Gettysburg? Chamberlin takes a COMMANDING lead in this movie!!
ReplyDeleteI am doing the Handout (45+ copies, etc) on General Chamberlain. Did you know that guy could speak 7 languages fluently? I went to an old shop in Savannah , Ga. years back and there were all kinds of Confederate officer pictures. They had ONE picture of a Yankee-it was Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. I bought it and it hangs in my room. 'dude was a rock star!
ReplyDeleteDoug mentioned the movie, Gettysburg. I had thought of requiring each of you to see it, but it is so true to the book, Killer Angels, that I felt it would be overkill. For a good (lengthy) feel of the battle (and book), you might want to watch it. It is, in my opinion, very well done. It was done on site and with reenactment groups as the armies, so they knew much more about the time and characters than most stand-in characters would. Plus they had costumes and equipment of the times for authenticity.
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy Gettysburg as well. I usually show clips of it when I get to the civil war. I wasn't as blown away by Gods and Generals though. That movie was just way too long for my tastes.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh!!! I went and rented Gettysburg after finishing my reading (just as was suggested by some of you). I cried, jumped up and down, the whole bit. The entire charge over and over again towards Chamberlain and his guys, and then their last chance charge down the hill.....Oh my crud! I thought the book was good....but I LOVED the movie. I pulled the book out during it and read some parts word for word again. Great show!!!
